See the short bio for my pre-university activities.
I have been studying since 1999 at the University of Helsinki, specifically the Computer Science department.
I currently hold 60cu's of studies, mostly in computer science which I major in. My secondary subjects are mathematics, statistics and philosophy.
I intend to graduate in what is hopefully no more than a few years from now, and thus would need to finish my secondary subjects which I have barely started at the moment. It's also been something of a desire for me to participate in an exchange program in order to study in the US for a year, but for now that isn't very actual.
I have been working at Fishpool Creations since January 2000, doing subcontracting projects. Since then, I've been involved in a rather large-scale Perl project for F-Secure, a large but abandoned (due to unknown reasons) project for Deutsche Bahn and an internal Fishpool project using Java. See my resume for more detailed information.
I am currently working with a Java-based project at Comptel, a company which develops mediation software for mobile networks.
To get more money. :) Seriously speaking, I need to get rid of work for a while and finish my studies. I'm not sure when I'll be able to do that, but hopefully within a year (stop working that is, not graduate). Once I'm done with my studies, I am hoping Fishpool will be developing a product of its own, in which case I would most probably want to continue working there. Otherwise, well, I might look at other alternatives, but that's not something to worry about now. :)
I was born in Hämeenlinna in 1978. I spent most of my childhood and youth in Evitskog, a small village of around 500 people in the county of Kirkkonummi. My first school was Evitskogs lågstadieskola, a small Swedish elementary school. In 1988, my family embarked on a one-year excursion to Karlsruhe, Germany, where my father held a visiting researcher's position. Having returned and finished elementary school, I continued to a Swedish high school, Kyrkslätts svenska skolcentrum. Once more in 1994, my father received a one-year visiting professor's position and we went abroad, this time to Linz, Austria. I eventually graduated from a Finnish secondary high school, Masalan lukio in 1998.
Having finished school, I proceeded to complete a more questionable obligatory task, military service. I performed my service period for the most part in Upinniemi, Kirkkonummi, engaging in what was called "sea surveillance", which amounted to observing boats crossing the Finnish gulf. There will eventually be some thoughts about Finnish military here. I also took some pictures of the place where I was stationed.
With military service behind, I moved out and started pursuing a degree in computer science at the University of Helsinki, and since January 2000 I have been employed by Fishpool Creations.
I have been into IRC since 1993. Back then I frequented EFnet, which was later split into EFnet and IRCnet, the latter being the side I was on. Around mid-1995, I found my way to a fairly new network called DALnet and became rather fond of its Services system which provided nickname and channel registering features. I became increasingly involved with the administrative side of DALnet, receiving an O:line (IRC operator status) on cin.dal.net (which no longer exists), then later on xgw.dal.net (also gone). Somewhere around 1997 (give or take a year) I ran into some disagreements regarding mailing list policies with the "executive board" of the time, and consequently resigned my position, deciding it wasn't worth the hassle.
It took me until 1999 to become interested in IRC administration again, what with changing over to EsperNet, a much smaller and administratively saner network. Since that time I have been running a server of my own, damocles.esper.net. So far, it's been fun! I've also arranged for the printing of EsperNet T-shirts, not that that is much of an issue :).
Held recently for the third time, The Alternative Party is an event that celebrates the choice of being different and non-mainstream, be it by using fringe computers (which was the original purpose of the event and still the main focus), listening to strange, unusual music or just making unusual choices in general.
I've been an organizer on all 3 "altparties", and will probably be one the next time as well, if there ever will be one. It's just a great thing to be part of, with a nice rebellish atmosphere and much to do and see.
This is pretty much the only form of classic indoor sport that I ever developed an interest for, probably because it's the only one that gets me interested enough in the tactical side of the game to forget about the work involved. :) I'm not at all skilled at it of course, but it makes for a rather fun way of keeping myself in something remotely reminiscent of a decent shape.
Also known as Quasar, LaserTag or Laser Quest, MegaZone is a game played indoors armed with laser-firing (no, not industrial strength, they are harmless unless you point them at an eye at a very close proximity) weapons and wearing suits which register the hits you take on your shoulders, chest or weapon. This is a really fun sport, but also rather expensive. The strangest thing is, you get really exhausted and sweaty fast, yet enjoy it!
It may not be properly classified as an activity, considering I only do it once a year (if that), but downhill skiing is probably the only winter sport I find interesting.
